Any teeth can get impacted in the bone, but most common is the wisdom teeth.
All impacted wisdom teeth do not need to be removed. If the impacted wisdom tooth is causing problems, then it will probably have to be removed.
Impacted teeth usually are in different angulation in the oral cavity and it is difficult to brush and maintain the oral hygiene. Also, if food gets deposited and cavity is formed, it is difficult to treat that particular tooth. The cavity may extend deeper and cause infection.

Since patients are given local anesthesia, there is very slight chance of patient experiencing pain during the procedure. However some patients may have post-operative pain for few days which can be relieved by taking pain killers prescribed by the dentist.
If bone cutting is not involved while extracting wisdom teeth, then there would not be swelling. If bone has to be trimmed to assist in teeth removal, then you can expect some amount of swelling for a few days, which reduces gradually.
Never keep heat pack after wisdom teeth extraction as it will increase the blood supply to the area immediately and will cause swelling. You may keep ice pack intermediately for the first 24 hours.
