Several materials are available for dental fillings. Some include Gold, porcelain, Silver amalgam, glass ionomer cement and composites.
Definitely, you can get tooth colored filling done. Composites are the cement of choice.
Usually fillings last for about 5 to 10 years if maintained properly.
If complete caries is removed and restored, then it can prevent further decay of that tooth.
Usually if proper base cement is placed and restoration is done, then there are less chances of sensitivity due to fillings.
Your tooth may feel a little sensitive after it's filled. Sensitivity is completely normal and usually goes away in a day or two.
When the decay is deeper or close to the pulp, after the caries is removed, a temporary filling is usually given to observe if any damage to the pulp has occurred. If there is no pain or sensitivity for 3-4 days of the temporary filling, then a permanent restoration is done.
Yes, they are still in use but most people choose tooth colored fillings over silver amalgam fillings.
Normal oral hygiene practice and regular dental checkup would be necessary to maintain a proper filling.
