When plaque deposit on teeth and are left for a long time they start to creep down towards root and cause infection. This infection starts to destroy bone and tissues around the teeth roots, which loosens the teeth and causes loss of teeth.
Periodontitis can’t be completely reversed, but if proper treatment is given then the progression of it can be stopped which will aid in regeneration of part of periodontium. Also the patient needs to follow strict oral hygiene procedure.
Poor oral hygiene, habit of chewing tobacco and smoking cigarettes, poor systemic health are some of the main reasons for periodontal disease.
Treatment for periodontitis include two stages :
. Stage I: Scaling and deep cleaning
. Stage II: Periodontal flap surgery
No, your teeth do not become loose because of scaling procedure. Some patients feel their teeth are loose because of removal of tartar that would be holding the compromised teeth.
Normally after periodontal flap surgery procedure a periodontal pack will be placed at the site of surgery to prevent any irritation. Painkillers will be prescribed to relieve pain if present.
It depends on the oral condition. A comprehensive clinical examination with X-rays will tell what the areas are which needs periodontal flap surgery.
The overall success rate of both surgical and nonsurgical options is around 87%. But most of the success depends on how well patient is motivated and maintains oral health.
Normally flap surgery takes about 45 to 60 minutes per quadrant.
