Pits and fissures of the occlusal surfaces are more prone for plaque accumulation and development of caries. So, to prevent caries pit and fissure sealants are necessary.
The pit and fissure sealants provides a physical barrier that inhibits microorganisms and food particles accumulation, preventing caries initiation, and arresting caries progression if initial caries is present.
They are a strong, clear or tooth-coloured coating that a dentist applies to the chewing surfaces of the teeth where pit and fissures form.
Sealants are often applied as soon as the first permanent teeth start to come through. This is usually between 6 to 7 years of age. The rest are usually sealed as soon as they appear which can be any time between 11 and 14 years of age.
Usually pit and fissure sealants last for up to 10 years. Regular dental visits can determine if sealants are present on teeth and if it requires replacement.
