If you have deep decay with pain radiating to the jaws then it is a sign that decay has reached pulp and needs root canal treatment.
Yes, if you have a fractured tooth or if you have had a trauma to the teeth, then root canal treatment would be required.
Since patients are given anaesthesia, a root canal isn’t more painful than a regular dental procedure. However once the anaesthetic effects wear out, you may have slight discomfort for few days which can be prevented by taking simple painkillers.
Depending on the level of infection your dentist will prescribe antibiotics if necessary. Do not take any antibiotics without prescription.
Although you will most likely be numb for few hours following the procedure, most patients are able to return to work following a root canal treatment.
It is better to have soft diet on the treated site till a permanent crown is place.
Yes, it is necessary to get a crown after root canal treatment is done to prevent the remaining portion of teeth getting fractured. Since the nerve supply to the treated tooth is cut, the tooth becomes brittle. The crown prevents the brittle tooth from getting fractured.
While most teeth can be treated with root canal treatment there are few occasions where the treatment is not possible. They include – inaccessible canals, fractured root and inadequate bone support.
Usually the teeth last as long as there is no further infection and the patient maintains good oral health.
